International Peace Day 2009

International Peace Day 2009

International Peace Day is September 21st and this year, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon gave a little talk on what he would like this peace day. A day that is honoring a global ceasefire. A day of no bloodshed. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asks for an online and real-life campaign against nuclear weapons and war and bombs. He wants to raise awareness of their cost and devastation and encourage disarming our weapons, worldwide.

"We must build on this momentum. To that end, I am launching the WMD-WeMustDisarm! Campaign. Over the next 100 days, the United Nations and our partners around the world will work to raise awareness of the true costs and dangers of nuclear weapons. Between now and 21 September, we will issue 100 reasons to disarm, via Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, email, text message, radio and from friend-to-friend. Celebrities will also help us spread the message. And finally, as we observe the International Day of Peace with world leaders gathered in New York for the 64th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, I will proclaim one strong, simple message: We Must Disarm!"

That's fine and totally peaceful and all but, how will we ever be able to trust each other again? Who's going to be the first guy to lay down his gun? I think it is a great idea but, how easy is it to please everyone with peace? What does that cost? What does that take? An agreement so universal and so sacred, that we would uphold it before all else. That's what. Peace, a fundamental fact of life and the agreement of Peace, first. Peace, always. Peace be to you and peace be to me. Peace be to all our countries. It is a dream worth trying for, isn't it? We should be able to just talk it out, minus the crazies, we outnumber them! Right?

How will you spend your September 21st this year? I wish for you, lots of peace and happiness. Maybe you can make a Peace punch and invite friends over and listen to reggae and John Lennon and talk about how to bring peace to the world. Peace to your environment, family, living room, to your heart, workplace, peace to your pet. Peace to your local sea life. Peace to your mind at night. Peace to those who are suffering.
